EditorialGiuseppe Verdi · Verona, Arena di Verona10 performances · 25 Jun – 11 Sep 2027
Verdi’s most intimate tragedy on the Arena’s vast stage is a beautiful paradox — a chamber story of love and sacrifice, played out beneath the open sky for thousands. Paul Curran directs.
Traviata rewards travellers who love opera as human drama rather than pure spectacle: melodies you already half-know, and an emotional arc that lands even on the grandest scale.
Violetta, a Parisian courtesan, gives up the one true love of her life for the sake of his family’s honour — and pays for it. Verdi’s tenderest, most personal score.
Violetta, celebrated and gravely ill, dares to believe in love with the young Alfredo and leaves her glittering life for him. Alfredo’s father, fearing scandal, secretly begs her to give him up for the sake of the family; she agrees, letting Alfredo believe she has abandoned him. He humiliates her in public before the truth emerges. By the time he returns, forgiven and adoring, it is too late — she dies in his arms, her one act of love the sacrifice no one saw.
The shift from the glittering party music of Act I to the stripped-bare intimacy of the final act — the whole tragedy is in that contrast.
Directed by Paul Curran.
For the romantic, and for anyone whose first opera this might be — Traviata is the gateway that never disappoints.
Saved to My Journeys and set as your active evening.
Availability and start times come from Arena di Verona. Any detail still to be announced is marked as such, never invented.
The Arena is an open-air Roman amphitheatre. Performances go ahead under the night sky; a cushion for the stone terraces is worth having.
Arrive well before the curtain: thousands of small candles are lit across the terraces as night falls, and the atmosphere before the first note is part of the evening.
In the event of severe weather the festival may delay or interrupt a performance — the official Arena site holds the current policy.
Accessible seating and services are arranged directly with the Arena di Verona. Venue information

Personally visited, remembered and chosen for the rhythm of an Arena day — from a proper Veronese lunch to the table before the curtain.
Founder’s Pick
Founder’s PickThe table Opera Atlas would book before the Arena — polished without feeling formal, with excellent cooking and an evening paced around the performance rather than rushed into it.
Special pre-opera seating begins from 19:00, leaving time to enjoy dinner properly before the curtain.
Visit restaurant
Founder visitedA historic Veronese wine address for the measured pause between the afternoon and the Arena — atmospheric enough for a glass, substantial enough to become the table itself.
On opera evenings reservations can begin from 18:30, making it particularly well suited to aperitivo or an early dinner.
Visit restaurant
Founder visitedDark wood, walls of old photographs and the reassuring character of a proper Veronese trattoria — an authentic lunch before the evening begins to build.
Best as an unhurried lunch, leaving the afternoon and pre-opera hours beautifully open.

Founder visitedA few steps from the Arena with a long association with Verona’s opera nights — the address for travellers who want dinner and the festival atmosphere to feel almost inseparable.
Choose it when proximity to the Arena matters most, or when you want the evening to keep its operatic atmosphere around dinner.
