Verona Beneath the Stars

A summer of opera, ballet and extraordinary music staged within one of the world’s most remarkable ancient theatres.

11 June — 11 September 2027

Why Verona

An ancient city. A summer stage unlike any other.

For more than a century, when summer settles over the Veneto, a two-thousand-year-old Roman amphitheatre in the heart of Verona becomes the largest open-air opera house on earth. As the light fades, thousands of small candles are lit across the stone terraces, and the evening begins long before the first note.

Around it lies a city built for the hours either side of a performance — a compact historic centre you can cross on foot, frescoed palazzi and quiet churches, tables where dinner is an event in itself, and the Valpolicella hills a short drive beyond. OperaAtlas treats all of it as one composition: the performance is the reason, and the city is the setting.

A walkable city
Hotel, dinner and the Arena are mostly minutes apart on foot through the old centre.
The table
A dining culture where the evening is chosen around the curtain, not simply by reputation.
Beyond the curtain
Museums, gardens and the Valpolicella hills for the hours the performance leaves you wanting more.

The Three Doors

Choose how your Verona journey should feel

Three editorial expressions of the same Opera Atlas journey — not price tiers. Elevated sits at the centre as our natural balance of ceremony, comfort and ease.

Start with the expression that feels most like the journey you want to remember.

Where to Stay

Rooms chosen for the walk to the Arena

A few representative rooms from the OperaAtlas Verona collection — chosen for the ease of the evening, not simply the name on the door. The full collection and 2027 rates arrive in a later phase.

Opera Atlas · Founder-tested Verona

Four restaurants we would return to.

Personally visited, remembered and chosen for the rhythm of an Arena day — from a proper Veronese lunch to the table before the curtain.

Founder’s Pick
Founder’s Pick · Pre-opera dinner

Trattoria I Masenini

The table Opera Atlas would book before the Arena — polished without feeling formal, with excellent cooking and an evening paced around the performance rather than rushed into it.

Special pre-opera seating begins from 19:00, leaving time to enjoy dinner properly before the curtain.

Antica Bottega del Vino

A historic Veronese wine address for the measured pause between the afternoon and the Arena — atmospheric enough for a glass, substantial enough to become the table itself.

On opera evenings reservations can begin from 18:30, making it particularly well suited to aperitivo or an early dinner.

Founder visited · Veronese lunch

Trattoria al Pompiere

Dark wood, walls of old photographs and the reassuring character of a proper Veronese trattoria — an authentic lunch before the evening begins to build.

Best as an unhurried lunch, leaving the afternoon and pre-opera hours beautifully open.

Tre Marchetti Trattoria

A few steps from the Arena with a long association with Verona’s opera nights — the address for travellers who want dinner and the festival atmosphere to feel almost inseparable.

Choose it when proximity to the Arena matters most, or when you want the evening to keep its operatic atmosphere around dinner.

After the applause

Do not let the evening end at the gate.

Arena performances can finish late, so the recommendation has to respect the clock. One proper late-night cocktail bar, one rooftop for earlier finishes, and one deliberately unbooked walk give the journey three truthful endings.

Opera Atlas pick · Proper late-night option

Romeo Cocktail Bar

When the performance finishes late, go somewhere that is genuinely built for the hour. Romeo is a dedicated cocktail bar in the historic centre with a deep spirits list and current opening well beyond midnight.

Piazza Bra’s Liston after midnight

Sometimes the strongest ending is simply to walk. Leave Piazza Bra slowly, follow the Liston and the old-centre arcades, and let the city empty around you before returning to the hotel.

The Morning After

Slow hours in the Valpolicella hills

A great performance deserves room to settle. For the journeys that suit it, OperaAtlas can extend the stay into the Valpolicella hills — terraced vineyards, a long lunch, and the unhurried morning that lets the night before become a memory rather than an event that simply ended.

An optional extension, offered only where it fits the journey. OperaAtlas does not invent winery partnerships.

Choose your morning

Three ways to let Verona continue after the applause: beautifully considered, elevated, or the private Dream experience.

Beautifully Considered · Best value

Montresor winery experience

A focused winery visit for travellers who want the Valpolicella story without committing to a half-day tour — easier on time and budget, while still giving the morning a distinct wine-country character.

This Viator experience is centred on Montresor winery in Verona. Check the live duration, tasting inclusions, meeting point and cancellation terms before booking.

Elevated · Curated half-day

Into Valpolicella

This curated Viator experience departs from Verona, includes private transportation and visits Valpolicella wine country. Check the live itinerary, departure time, inclusions and cancellation terms before booking.

Dream · Private experience

Valpolicella wine, olive oil & lunch

For travellers who want the most indulgent version of the morning after: a private Valpolicella experience built around wine, olive oil and lunch.

A private Viator experience from Verona combining Valpolicella wine, olive oil and lunch. Check the live itinerary, transport arrangements, duration, inclusions, latest reviews and cancellation terms before booking.
