Carmen

Georges Bizet · Verona, Arena di Verona11 performances · 2 Jul – 10 Sep 2027

Bizet’s Carmen is opera at its most immediate — irresistible melodies, heat and danger, a heroine who refuses to be owned. In the Arena, with its space for spectacle and crowd, it is thrilling.

This is the classic Franco Zeffirelli staging the Arena is celebrated for: lavish, cinematic and full of movement. A natural first opera, and a reliable highlight for seasoned travellers.

The story

A soldier throws away everything — duty, freedom, his life — for a fiercely independent woman who will not be possessed. Desire and fate on a collision course.

In Seville, the soldier Don José is undone the moment Carmen, a free-spirited worker at the cigarette factory, throws him a flower. He abandons his regiment and his gentle sweetheart Micaëla to follow her into a smugglers’ world. But Carmen’s heart has already turned to the swaggering bullfighter Escamillo. Consumed by jealousy, José confronts her outside the arena and, when she refuses to return to him, kills her as the crowd roars for Escamillo inside — freedom paid for with her life.

What to listen for

How many tunes you already know — the Habanera, the Toreador Song — and how Bizet turns them from swagger into tragedy by the final scene.

The production

Staging associated with Franco Zeffirelli.

The venue

The Arena is an open-air Roman amphitheatre. Performances go ahead under the night sky; a cushion for the stone terraces is worth having.

When to arrive

Arrive well before the curtain: thousands of small candles are lit across the terraces as night falls, and the atmosphere before the first note is part of the evening.

Weather

In the event of severe weather the festival may delay or interrupt a performance — the official Arena site holds the current policy.

Opera Atlas · Founder-tested Verona

Four restaurants we would return to.

Personally visited, remembered and chosen for the rhythm of an Arena day — from a proper Veronese lunch to the table before the curtain.

Founder’s Pick · Pre-opera dinner

Trattoria I Masenini

The table Opera Atlas would book before the Arena — polished without feeling formal, with excellent cooking and an evening paced around the performance rather than rushed into it.

Special pre-opera seating begins from 19:00, leaving time to enjoy dinner properly before the curtain.

Antica Bottega del Vino

A historic Veronese wine address for the measured pause between the afternoon and the Arena — atmospheric enough for a glass, substantial enough to become the table itself.

On opera evenings reservations can begin from 18:30, making it particularly well suited to aperitivo or an early dinner.

Trattoria al Pompiere

Dark wood, walls of old photographs and the reassuring character of a proper Veronese trattoria — an authentic lunch before the evening begins to build.

Best as an unhurried lunch, leaving the afternoon and pre-opera hours beautifully open.

Tre Marchetti Trattoria

A few steps from the Arena with a long association with Verona’s opera nights — the address for travellers who want dinner and the festival atmosphere to feel almost inseparable.

Choose it when proximity to the Arena matters most, or when you want the evening to keep its operatic atmosphere around dinner.
