Flagship Perfect Evening

Aida — Stefano Poda

Giuseppe Verdi · Verona, Arena di Verona5 performances · 12 Aug – 8 Sep 2027

This is the OperaAtlas Flagship Perfect Evening for the 2027 season. Stefano Poda directs, designs and choreographs a single, unified vision of Verdi’s Aida — the kind of production that draws travellers to Verona specifically for these few August and September nights.

Poda’s work is known for luminous, sculptural stagecraft and a striking control of light and mass — an Aida conceived as one continuous image rather than a sequence of scenes. Beneath the open sky of the Arena, on the scale only this theatre allows, it becomes an evening built to be remembered.

The story

Verdi’s tragedy sets an impossible love against duty and country: an enslaved Ethiopian princess and the Egyptian commander who loves her, caught between the people they belong to and the feeling they cannot deny. Grandeur and intimacy in the same breath.

Radamès is chosen to lead Egypt’s army against Ethiopia — the homeland of Aida, the enslaved princess he loves. When her father is captured, Aida is torn between love and loyalty to her people. Radamès, betrayed into revealing a military secret, is condemned as a traitor and sealed alive in a tomb beneath the temple. There he finds Aida, who has hidden herself to die at his side. The opera closes not in spectacle but in near-silence — two voices fading together as the stone closes over them.

What to listen for

The turn from public spectacle to private whisper — the great triumphal weight giving way to the final, hushed duet. Watch how Poda’s light does the emotional work as much as the voices.

The production

New production directed, designed and choreographed by Stefano Poda for the Arena di Verona.

Trattoria I Masenini

The table Opera Atlas would book before the Arena — polished without feeling formal, with excellent cooking and an evening paced around the performance rather than rushed into it.

Special pre-opera seating begins from 19:00, leaving time to enjoy dinner properly before the curtain.

Antica Bottega del Vino

A historic Veronese wine address for the measured pause between the afternoon and the Arena — atmospheric enough for a glass, substantial enough to become the table itself.

On opera evenings reservations can begin from 18:30, making it particularly well suited to aperitivo or an early dinner.

Choose it when proximity to the Arena matters most, or when you want the evening to keep its operatic atmosphere around dinner.
