La traviata — Opera on the Lake

Giuseppe Verdi · Bregenz, Seebühne28 performances · 22 Jul – 22 Aug 2027

Verdi’s La traviata returns to the Seebühne in Damiano Michieletto’s production, with Lake Constance and the night sky forming part of an experience no indoor opera house can reproduce.

The 2027 performances run for two hours without an interval, making the hours before the curtain especially important: dinner should be early, arrival unhurried and weather planning part of the composition.

The story

Violetta Valéry is pulled between the life society expects of her and the possibility of a more truthful love with Alfredo — a private tragedy played against a dazzling public world.

What to listen for

The contrast between Violetta’s brilliant public virtuosity and the increasingly exposed lyricism of her private voice; Verdi makes the social room and the individual heart sound like two different worlds.

The production

Damiano Michieletto directs; Paolo Fantin designs the stage. The 2027 cast has not yet been announced by the festival.

When to arrive

Treat the lake, weather and audience arrival as part of the event. Give yourself time to be seated well before the 21:00/21:15 curtain.

Weather

Bring warm, waterproof clothing when needed. Umbrellas must not be used during the Seebühne performance because they obstruct sightlines.
